What it looks like
Damage to tree roots during construction, often from heavy plant compaction or trenching, can lead to tree instability, disease, and eventual failure.
Why it happens
Tree roots, particularly the majority within 600mm of the surface, are highly susceptible to damage that can compromise tree stability and health. Common site activities such as stripping topsoil, excavating trenches, compacting soil with heavy plant, storing materials, or raising soil levels near trees can cause irreversible harm. Root systems often extend beyond the tree's canopy, sometimes exceeding its height.
