Depth of cover to a buried drain

600 mm under gardens and other areas not subject to vehicles; 900 mm under roads and driveways

Buried foul or surface water drain outside the building footprint

Minimum depth of cover over a rigid drain pipe, measured from finished level to the crown of the pipe.

    Basis in regulation

How to check it on site

Take levels over the pipe run before backfill, and again after landscaping — the depth that matters is the one under the finished surface.

    Common failure

Drains laid to a temporary level, then reduced cover once the plot is regraded or a driveway is formed over the run.
