Guarding is mandated for retaining structures where the drop is greater than 600mm to an accessible lower level. Additionally, if the distance from the top of the retaining wall to the higher ground is less than 300mm, guarding is required, as is the case for paths adjacent to drops over 600mm. Such guarding must be at least 1100mm high and designed to prevent children from climbing it.

Measure the height of level changes and ensure guarding is correctly installed to a minimum height of 1100mm, with no climbable features.
Common failure
Guarding is often not installed to the required 1100mm height or features horizontal elements that make it easily climbable by children.
