Concrete should not be placed if its temperature at the point of use is below 5°C, as fresh concrete is vulnerable to frost damage. Unless specifically designed for wet conditions, concrete should not be placed in or under water. Adequate concrete must be prepared or ordered to allow for continuous placement, and it should be deposited directly into its final position or as close as possible to prevent segregation and ensure full compaction.

How to check it on site
Check concrete temperature before placement, confirm no standing water in the pour area, and observe that concrete is placed continuously and directly to minimise handling and segregation.
Common failure
Placing concrete in freezing conditions or into standing water can severely compromise its strength and durability. Interruptions in placement or excessive handling can lead to cold joints and segregation, weakening the structure.
