Bed and perpend joints in masonry are set out on a 10 mm nominal joint. Joints should stay reasonably consistent across the elevation rather than being opened and closed to chase the gauge.

How to check it on site

Check the gauge rod against the course heights at each lift; drifting joints show up badly on a long elevation.

Common failure

Joints opened up to pull the brickwork back onto gauge, leaving a visibly thick band of mortar across the elevation.
