Sound insulation for soil pipes involves either encasing them in boxing made from a material with a minimum mass of 15kg/m², or wrapping them with at least 25mm of unfaced mineral wool, typically 10kg/m³ density. Within floor voids, horizontal pipes must be wrapped and adequately supported to prevent contact with the floor decking or ceiling. The insulation should be continuous through sound-insulating floors.

How to check it on site
Check that soil pipes are either properly wrapped with mineral wool or housed in a suitably mass-dense, insulated boxing.
Common failure
Acoustic wrapping is often omitted or insufficient, particularly at ceiling or floor penetrations, reducing its effectiveness.
