A handrail is mandatory for flights of stairs where the rise exceeds 600mm. It must be securely fixed, providing a continuous, firm handhold throughout its entire length. The vertical height of the handrail above the pitch line should be maintained between 900mm and 1000mm, with a minimum 25mm clearance from any adjacent surface to allow for adequate grip. The ends of the handrail should be rounded or returned to the wall to prevent clothing snagging.
