Read the full answerA handrail is mandatory for flights of stairs where the rise exceeds 600mm. It must be securely fixed, providing a continuous, firm handhold throughout its entire length. The vertical height of the handrail above the pitch line should be maintained between 900mm and 1000mm, with a minimum 25mm clearance from any adjacent surface to allow for adequate grip. The ends of the handrail should be rounded or returned to the wall to prevent clothing snagging.
Basis in regulation
How to check it on site
Check the handrail height, continuous grip, 25mm clearance, and ensure ends are safely terminated.
Common failure
Incorrect handrail height, insufficient clearance from the wall, or sharp/untreated ends that pose a snagging risk are common issues.
