For stairs incorporating tapered treads or winders, any handrail provided on the outside of the turn must offer a safe handhold for the full rise of the stair, particularly if the total rise exceeds 600mm. In England, Wales, and Scotland, a newel post can fulfil this function for stairs with up to four tapered treads/winders, provided it offers a safe handhold. Northern Ireland regulations typically require a dedicated handrail on the outside of all tapered stairs.

How to check it on site

Verify that a safe handhold is available throughout the entire rise of tapered stair sections, whether by handrail or suitably designed newel.

Common failure

Lack of a continuous handhold through a winder section, or newel posts that are too large or awkwardly shaped to provide a good grip.
