Staircases and landings require adequate guarding where there is a drop of more than 600mm. Guarding must be continuous along the full length of open sides, including landings, and designed to resist specified forces in accordance with BS 6180. It should also deter climbing and prevent a 100mm sphere from passing through any opening.

How to check it on site

Verify that guarding is present where required, continuous, securely fixed, at the correct height, and prevents a 100mm sphere from passing through any gap.
