First fix: what good looks like
Services routed within the zones the structure allows, fixed and supported properly, tested where they will be buried, and set out so second fix lands where the drawing says.
First fix is where the structure and the services meet, and where each can quietly ruin the other. The structural rules are simple and absolute: cut joists and studs only within the permitted zones, and never cut an engineered joist outside its printed knockouts. Pipework is judged on gradient, support and joint access. Branch discharge pipes need a fall within the permitted range and a route that keeps within the maximum branch length, or the trap will siphon and the customer will smell it. Everything buried behind plaster should be tested and recorded first — pressure test on the pipework, continuity and insulation resistance on the circuits — because the cost of finding a fault afterwards is a redecoration, not a repair.

Checks to clear before the trades open up the structure.
Walk the plot with the joist and truss layout and mark the permitted notch, hole and knockout zones before anyone drills. Set out kitchen, bathroom and utility positions on the floor so socket, waste and stack positions are fixed once, not moved at second fix. Confirm the stair opening gives the required headroom before the stair is ordered, and check hearth and flue positions against the appliance actually being installed. Agree who seals which penetrations for the air barrier, and have grommets, collars and fire stopping on site before the trade starts.
